The case of the bully at the Ateneo Junior High School made headlines everywhere and even invited a lot of unwanted attention from all kinds of people. Netizens both here and abroad even went as far as to challenge the boy and his family to a fist fight. In our anger and disgust, we turned out to be no different from Joaquin Montes Jr, the 14 year old who was tagged as the Ateneo bully.

Many have gotten used to the practice of paying full price, falling in line and being self-reliant as they had been for most of their lives. There is no shame in asking for the discounts afforded to you by law. Those who do demand to get their discounts, are sometimes met with jeering expressions from annoyed attendants. And this where misunderstandings turn to shouting matches. To the senior citizen, it is always best to know your rights and your benefits.These are:

Customer service hinges on the ability of an organization to understand and be sensitive to the needs of their customers. Persons with disabilities are paying customers too, no different from everybody else, except for the discounts, which the government reimburses by way of tax incentives. Still it is good business to develop and improve services for all customers, including the Pinoys with disabilities.
Not because you lost the use of your legs or your eyesight, hearing, or the ability to remember your past, does not mean you are not the same person. Our humanity is not in our fallibility, but in our ability to rise up after we fall. Some incidents in our lives are truly tragic that it may seem impossible to recover, not become the same person we once were, but there are many ways of hurdling these difficulties and eventually we will move on and become who we always were.
